Polish Leaders to Meet with Biden to Discuss Ukraine’s Possible NATO Membership

Polish Foreign Minister stated, “The presence of NATO forces in Ukraine is not unthinkable.”

President Joe Biden will welcome Poland’s President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk at the White House on March 12 in preparation for the upcoming NATO Summit, discussing potential admission of other countries, including Ukraine, to the Alliance.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre mentioned in a statement that the leaders will show their unwavering support for Ukraine’s defense and coordinate for the upcoming NATO Summit in Washington.

President Duda indicated during his visit to NATO’s Steadfast Defender 2024 exercise in Poland that discussions with President Biden would also cover potential Alliance expansion, including Ukraine’s accession and Polish arms procurement from the US.

However, for admission to NATO, a country must resolve territorial and international disputes, which poses a challenge for Ukraine currently engaged in a conflict with Russia.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed Ukraine’s future membership in the Alliance, yet highlighted that admitting a warring country amidst conflict is not currently on the agenda.

The meeting between Polish leaders and the US president coincides with Poland’s 25th anniversary of NATO membership. President Duda will proceed to Belgium to meet Mr. Stoltenberg after his visit.
