Premier Encourages Preparation for Flooding as 122 Northern NSW Schools Shut Down
Northern New South Wales is preparing for possible major flooding following Cyclone Alfred.
The New South Wales Education Department has closed 122 schools in the Northern Rivers region as Premier Chris Minns cautions residents to get ready for potentially extreme weather.
Minns mentioned the significant State Emergency Service (SES) presence and urged everyone to be cautious about floodwaters.
He emphasized the importance of not entering floodwaters and advised those at risk to seek shelter at evacuation centers.
Minns also warned against driving or walking through floodwaters, as this is a common cause of fatalities during natural disasters.
Minns also advised downloading important mobile apps for emergency situations, including the Emergency Plus app for accurate location sharing, Hazards Near Me for hazard information, Live Traffic for road conditions, and BoM Weather for weather forecasts.
The SES recommended preparing homes by securing loose items and moving vehicles away from potential hazards like trees and powerlines.
Due to the forecasted impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, schools in the affected areas will be closed from March 5-7, with plans to reopen on March 10.
