Premier Smith Travels to Washington for Trump Inauguration, Sets Meetings With Officials to Boost Trade Initiatives
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has shared details of her upcoming five-day trip to Washington. This trip includes meetings with governors, industry leaders, and attending President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Smith’s trip coincides with Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on Canadian products upon taking office, unless Canada takes action to stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking across the border.
An itinerary released on Jan. 17 outlines Smith’s activities during her time in the U.S. capital.
According to the release, Alberta exports approximately US$100 billion in energy to the U.S., which translates to US$300 billion in value-added products at American refineries, distributed globally by U.S. companies.
Smith emphasized the necessity of engaging with the incoming administration, members of Congress, and key officials to highlight Alberta’s pivotal role in North American energy security and economic prosperity, especially in light of the looming tariff threats.
The U.S. is Alberta’s largest trading partner, and the second-largest provincial exporter to the country. In 2023, Alberta’s exports to the U.S. totaled US$115.58 billion, accounting for about 90% of the province’s total exports for that year.
“During all my engagements in Washington, D.C., I will advocate for Alberta to be recognized as a preferred partner for ensuring North American energy security, reinforcing our long-standing friendship, and strengthening our mutually beneficial trade relationship,” Smith stated.
Itinerary
Smith is scheduled to depart for Washington on Jan. 18 to participate in an event hosted by Florida engaging with U.S. decision-makers.
On Jan. 19, Smith will meet with energy sector leaders and attend an event hosted by the Texas State Society.
Jan. 20 will see Smith at the presidential inauguration at Capital Hill, followed by an event at the Canadian Embassy and a Republican Governors’ Association event in the evening.
On Jan. 21, a roundtable discussion with U.S. governors and industry leaders is on the agenda.
Jan. 22 is reserved for meetings with U.S. decision-makers and elected officials, alongside a networking event on sustainable energy development solutions.
Smith is set to return to Alberta on Jan. 23.
Canada Prepares for Tariffs
In late November, Trump announced plans to impose 25% tariffs on all Canadian imports on his first day in office.
On Jan. 15, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the premiers discussed responses if Trump proceeds with the tariff threats.
The joint statement outlined measures taken to enhance border security and combat illicit drug trafficking, along with readiness to respond to U.S. tariffs with countermeasures.
Several officials, including Smith and Trudeau, have engaged with Trump to address the tariff issue. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly recently concluded a visit to Washington.
