President of the Métis National Council Decides against Re-running for Election Due to Expanding Family Size

The president of the Métis National Council is not seeking re-election, stating that she would instead focus on her growing family.

Cassidy Caron made history in 2021 by becoming the youngest person ever elected to lead the organization, which represents Métis groups in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.

Despite recent internal conflicts, she expressed pride in her accomplishments and the “strong, functioning, and ethical organization” she leaves behind.

The council gained attention recently due to a federal bill aiming to recognize the self-government of Métis groups in Ontario, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

While Ms. Caron supported member groups’ self-government efforts, First Nations and Manitoba Métis opposed the bill, leading to its stalled progress in Parliament.

After the upcoming election scheduled for September 24 in Saskatoon, the outgoing leader plans to continue serving her community in different capacities.
