Prime Minister disagrees with Foreign Minister’s support for ceasefire

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has thrown his support behind Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s remarks, saying her position aligns with the government’s stance on the current situation. During a discussion on ABC about Israel’s conflict with Hamas, Wong said that a ceasefire “must be agreed between the parties” and called on Israel to adhere to international humanitarian laws. The Prime Minister later clarified that Wong did not call for a ceasefire and that her comments were in line with the motion supported by the opposition in Parliament. Albanese also expressed support for a principled approach and condemned Hamas’ attacks on Israel. In response to criticism from Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, Albanese emphasized that the bipartisan motion passed in Parliament acknowledged Israel’s right to defend itself, among other things. The number of casualties in the conflict is increasing, with Humanitarian Affairs Head Andrea De Domenico calling for immediate action to avoid a major disaster. Amid the debate, there are calls for the Australian government to support a ceasefire, with some quarters of society expressing their support for the United Nations’ call. The former Prime Minister Scott Morrison raised concerns about a ceasefire allowing Hamas to regroup.
