Pro-Palestinian Demonstrators at University of Victoria Remove Campsite Following Trespass Warning

The University of Victoria indicates that pro-Palestinian protesters are disassembling an encampment that has been present on the campus for nearly three months.

Following the issuance of a trespass notice over the weekend, the school stated that administrators have concluded that further dialogue with the protesters is unlikely to succeed.

In an email dated July 22, the university mentioned that the protesters are in the process of taking down the encampment that was established on May 1.

While protesters had mentioned on social media that the school had set a deadline of the morning of July 22 for them to vacate, they had planned a “trespass breakfast” at that time without specifying their next course of action.

Requests for comment from the protest group have gone unanswered.

Another pro-Palestinian encampment at the University of British Columbia was voluntarily vacated on July 7, and Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo initiated legal action against protesters after issuing a trespass notice on July 11.

The encampments in British Columbia are among several protest sites at universities in Canada and the United States.

The protesters against the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza have been calling for universities to sever financial and academic connections with Israeli entities, among other demands.
