Protesters in Montreal Face Charges for Climbing Jacques Cartier Bridge During Climate Protest

A pair of environmental activists who climbed Montreal’s Jacques Cartier Bridge early Tuesday morning have been charged with mischief and wilfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

Olivier Huard and Jacob Pirro were set to appear in court today, alongside a third protester.

The third individual, Michèle Lavoie, is only facing a mischief charge related to obstructing, interrupting, or interfering with property valued over $5,000.

Huard and Pirro scaled to the top of the bridge as part of a climate protest on Tuesday, causing the closure of a main access point to the island for several hours during the morning rush hour.

Last Generation Canada and Antigone Collective claimed responsibility for the protest, demanding an end to fossil fuel extraction and criticizing government inaction on climate change.

The three activists were held overnight, and supporters were called upon to gather outside the courthouse today.
