Qatar Airways Dublin Flight Experiences Turbulence, Leaving 12 Injured
DUBLIN—Twelve individuals on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Ireland sustained injuries during turbulence, as announced by Dublin Airport on Sunday. Fortunately, the aircraft safely landed as scheduled.
The flight, identified as QR017 and operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, arrived just before 1 p.m. local time in Dublin (1200 GMT), according to the airport’s statement.
“Upon landing, emergency services, including Airport Police and our Fire and Rescue department, attended to the 6 passengers and 6 crew members who reported injuries after the turbulence incident over Turkey,” Dublin Airport stated.
Reports from Irish broadcaster RTE, based on passengers arriving at the airport, indicated that the incident occurred during food and beverage service and lasted less than 20 seconds.
Qatar Airways confirmed that a “small number” of passengers and crew members sustained minor injuries during the flight and were being treated for their injuries. The airline mentioned that the matter is under internal investigation.
This incident occurred following the emergency landing of a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore in Bangkok due to severe turbulence, resulting in the unfortunate death of a British man and numerous individuals in intensive care.
According to a 2021 study by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, turbulence-related airline accidents are the most common type. Between 2009 and 2018, more than a third of reported airline accidents were attributed to turbulence, causing a majority of injuries, but minimal aircraft damage.
