Qubec Premier Faces Criticism for $7-billion Investment in Northvolt Battery Plant

The pressure is mounting on Quebec Premier François Legault as opposition parties press for explanations regarding his government’s investment in the proposed Northvolt battery factory near Montreal.

Opposition leaders in the Quebec legislature on Tuesday urged the government to be more transparent about its deal with the Swedish manufacturer for the $7-billion project.

This call for transparency comes in light of reports that Northvolt is cutting 1,600 jobs in Sweden, which amounts to one-fifth of its workforce.

A significant portion of $710 million in provincial public funds has already been allocated to the project, including a $240-million loan to facilitate Northvolt’s purchase of the land approximately 30 kilometers east of Montreal for the plant construction.

Economy Minister Christine Fréchette stated in a press conference this afternoon that the Northvolt layoffs in Sweden do not impact the Quebec project, which she emphasized is still a top priority for the company.

The Parti Québécois requested an urgent discussion in the legislature on Monday, but the Speaker declined the request this afternoon.
