Quebec Government Takes Steps to Stop Illegal Dumping in Mohawk Territory
The Quebec government is taking action to stop illegal dumping in the Mohawk community of Kanesatake, located northwest of Montreal.
The Environment Department is coordinating “field interventions” this week with wildlife protection agents, inspectors, and environmental investigators.
The focus is on preventing unauthorized dumping and backfilling of potentially contaminated soil along the banks and shoreline of the Lake of Two Mountains, which is a fish habitat.
Local residents have reported trucks dumping contaminated soil and other materials in the area for years and are frustrated with the slow response from authorities.
During a recent operation, Quebec provincial police intercepted several trucks passing through the nearby village of Oka.
The government has warned that fines for illegal dumping could reach up to $6 million.
