Quebec Joins Health Accord with Ottawa, Signing $3.7B Deal as Final Province
Health Minister Mark Holland signed a $3.7-billion health pact with Quebec on March 27, bringing all 13 provinces and territories on board with Ottawa’s new health accord.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau proposed a new health-funding agreement to provinces over a year ago to boost federal health transfers and offer specific assistance.
This offer emerged as premiers and healthcare workers expressed concerns about the deteriorating condition of Canada’s healthcare systems.
In return for the funds, Ottawa requires provinces to provide reports on how the money will be allocated and evaluate if these funds are enhancing health outcomes for Canadians.
Initially, Quebec had reservations about signing the deal due to concerns about the sovereignty of its health data and potential jurisdictional overreach by Ottawa.
Now that agreements have been reached with every province and territory, Mr. Holland plans to convene his counterparts in the health sector in the coming weeks to discuss the next steps.
