Quebec Judge Allows Case Against Former Mountie Accused of Assisting China to Proceed

A Quebec court judge has ruled that the case against a former RCMP officer charged with helping China conduct foreign interference can proceed in the province.

Judge Sacha Blais denied William Majcher’s attempt to dismiss the indictment against him.

Majcher’s lawyers, aged 61, argued earlier that the charges should have been filed in British Columbia or Ontario rather than Quebec, which has no specific ties to the alleged offenses.

However, Judge Blais stated that the law clearly allows offenses against the Security of Information Act to be tried anywhere in Canada, regardless of where they were committed.

Mr. Majcher, residing in Hong Kong, faces charges under the act for conspiracy and committing preparatory acts for the benefit of a foreign entity.

Authorities allege that he used his Canadian network to obtain intelligence or services that aided the People’s Republic of China.

His charge sheet indicates that he committed the crimes in Vancouver, Toronto, Hong Kong, and other unspecified locations in Canada, China, and around the world.

The case is set to reconvene in June in Longueuil, Que., south of Montreal, with the trial scheduled for October.
