Quebec Plans to Ban Cellphones in Elementary and High Schools Throughout the School Day
The Quebec government is broadening its ban on cellphones in schools, instituting a prohibition on these devices throughout the grounds of the province’s elementary and high schools for the entire duration of the school day.
According to Education Minister Bernard Drainville, this initiative will promote social interactions among young people and aid in the prevention of cyberbullying.
Since January 2024, cellphones have been banned in Quebec classrooms, with a few exceptions.
This new restriction will commence this fall and will be in place from the start to the close of the school day, encompassing lunch breaks as well as hallways, cafeterias, and schoolyards.
The recommendation for this ban came from an all-party committee of legislative members assigned to investigate the effects of screen time and social media on the health of young individuals.
The committee concluded that cellphones were pervasive on school grounds and heard from specialists who indicated that extending the ban could help decrease students’ screen time while promoting other activities such as reading, socializing, or engaging in physical exercise.
