Quebec Premier Urges Immediate Reopening of North American Free-Trade Agreement
Quebec Premier François Legault is urging for immediate talks to renegotiate the North American free-trade agreement.
Legault made this statement in a special address to the legislature, following United States President Donald Trump’s decision to delay the imposition of 25 percent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods and services for 30 days.
He expressed concern over the economic uncertainty caused by ongoing threats of U.S. tariffs, likening it to injecting “poison” into the economy.
Lamenting Trump’s dissatisfaction with the agreement, Legault suggested that the U.S., Canada, and Mexico should initiate discussions promptly instead of waiting until the scheduled review in 2026.
In response to what he calls a “brutal economic attack” due to Trump’s tariff intentions, Legault emphasized the need for the province to diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on the U.S.
The Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, which came into effect in 2020, governs trade in the region, replacing the original deal implemented in 1994.
