Quebec Prepared to Send 300 Officers to Border in Response to Increase in Illegal Crossings into US
The Quebec government expresses concern over migrants crossing illegally into the United States from Canada and urges the RCMP to allocate necessary resources at the border.
François Bonnardel, Quebec’s public security minister, made the remarks today in the provincial capital, just a week before Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration.
Trump has been signaling potential tariffs on Canadian exports if border security isn’t enhanced by the federal government.
Bonnardel highlights the Swanton sector as a hotspot, encompassing parts of Quebec, Ontario, and U.S. states like Vermont and New York.
Of the 26,000 illegal crossings from Canada into the U.S. in 2024, 19,000 occurred in the Swanton region, according to Bonnardel.
Currently, there are 800 federal and provincial officers in operation in the Swanton sector, with Quebec prepared to deploy an additional 300 provincial police officers within 48 hours in response to a spike in illegal crossings.
