Renowned Australians Advocate for Complete Prohibition of Gambling Ads
Every year, Australia’s population of 27 million is estimated to lose a staggering $25 billion to various forms of gambling.
Calls are being made to the Labor government and Coalition opposition to outlaw all gambling advertising within three years, aligning with the recommendations of a 2023 report on gambling harm.
Sixty prominent Australians from diverse backgrounds, including politics, unions, sports, and faith, have sent a letter to both party leaders as part of an ongoing campaign by the Alliance for Gambling Reform.
Notable signers of the letter include former Prime Ministers John Howard and Malcolm Turnbull, former state premiers Dominic Perrottet and Steve Bracks, family violence prevention advocate Rosie Batty, and Jesuit priest Frank Brennan.
Several federal independent MPs and senators have also signed the letter, urging Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to implement the 31 recommendations of the Federal Inquiry into Online Gambling to curb the inundation of gambling ads aimed at Australians, especially children.
The letter specifically calls for a ban on inducements and promotions that can trap individuals trying to quit gambling.

John Howard expressed concerns about the harmful effects of gambling advertising and losses within the community, calling for urgent action to address the issue.
Various studies have highlighted the negative impact of gambling advertising, including children being exposed to a high volume of such ads on TV and the significant growth in sports wagering in Australia.
The Alliance for Gambling Reform emphasizes the importance of a complete ban on all gambling advertising to protect children and prevent further harm to individuals and families affected by gambling addiction.
