Report: Environment and Climate Change Canada has awarded $500 million in grants since 2022

Recent documents reveal that Environment and Climate Change Canada has distributed over $500 million in grants and contributions to non-profits, academia, and international non-governmental organizations since 2022.

Specifically, the department allocated $424.7 million to not-for-profit organizations or charities, $22.0 million to academia, and $76.5 million to international organizations, totaling approximately $523 million.

This information stems from a May 27 access to information request initiated by Conservative MP Branden Leslie. The request sought details on the total amounts of grants and contributions given out by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) since 2019, categorized by recipient type. The department noted that tracking recipient type data began on April 1, 2022, hence data was only available from the 2022 to 2023 fiscal year and onwards.

ECCC’s grants recorded figures of $99 million in 2022 starting on April 1, $324 million in 2023, and $100 million until April 9, 2024.

Notable recipients included organizations like the United Nations Environment Programme, the Canadian Institute for Clean Growth and Climate Change, the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Additionally, funding was dispersed to various other organizations such as the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association, Nature Manitoba, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Delta Marsh Bird Observatory, Canadian Council on Invasive Species, and the Marmot Recovery Foundation.

ECCC refrained from providing a detailed description of each recipient’s funding purpose due to time constraints.

ECCC emphasizes its allocation of funding through various programs to entities with projects focused on protecting or conserving the natural environment. The department is currently supporting initiatives related to clean technology, carbon pollution pricing proceeds, green infrastructure, and the low carbon economy.

ECCC’s budget for 2023 was approximately $1.96 billion, with allocations of $609 million towards conserving nature, $478 million for “Taking Action on Clean Growth and Climate Change,” $379 million for pollution prevention and management, $281 million for weather forecasting and environmental conditions, and $219 million for internal services.
