Report Shows UK Records Highest Number of Anti-Semitic Incidents in 40 Years
The Community Security Trust reported that 66 percent of anti-Semitic incidents took place on or after the deadly terror attack in Israel on October 7, 2023.
Following Hamas’s terror attack on Israel, a large number of anti-Semitic incidents have led the UK to face its highest levels of anti-Semitism in 40 years, according to a charity.
A ‘Celebration’ of Hamas’s Terror Attack
The report detailed that the substantial increase in anti-Jewish hate was, if anything, a celebration of the Hamas massacre. It revealed that 31 anti-Semitic incidents were reported to the charity on the day of the terror attack itself.
Other incident types included abusive behavior, threats, assaults, damage or desecration, and mass-produced anti-Semitic literature. The increase was seen primarily in Greater London and Greater Manchester, homes to the largest Jewish populations in the UK.
Home Secretary James Cleverly commented on CST’s report, referring to the rise in anti-Semitism as “utterly deplorable.” He added that the government had taken “strong steps” to confront anti-Semitism, following an increase in hate crime.
Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper also condemned the rise in anti-Semitism, emphasizing the need to continue rooting it out from society. Moreover, she called the recent increase in anti-Semitism “appalling and intolerable.”
Furthermore, the rise of anti-Semitism was evident within the political arena, with members of the Labour party withdrawing support from parliamentary candidates who made anti-Semitic remarks.
There were also reports of anti-Semitic incidents at comedy shows and other events, displaying an alarming trend in the rise of anti-Semitism. One individual expressed their experience of feeling unwelcome as a Jewish Israeli in London.
