Report to Senate: Achieving Canada’s Climate Goals Requires Triple Non-Carbon Electricity Output

According to a submission by Newfoundland and Labrador to the Senate energy committee, Canada needs to increase its non-carbon electricity output by double or triple in order to achieve its 2050 net-zero emission targets. The submission suggests that without additional federal subsidies, it is unlikely that these targets can be met.
The submission states, as reported by Blacklock’s Reporter, that in order for Canada to achieve its goal of a net-zero electricity sector by 2035, it will require an additional 121 terawatt hours of electricity supply to replace sources that produce carbon emissions. Energy NL explains that this amount of electricity generation is equivalent to that of “four Churchill Falls.”
Churchill Falls is Canada’s second-largest hydroelectric plant, only surpassed by the Robert-Bourassa generating station situated in northwestern Quebec.
