Reviewing How Toronto Terror Suspects Entered Canada: Federal Government Engaged in Investigation
According to Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, federal departments are currently reviewing how two individuals with suspected ties to a terrorist group overseas managed to enter Canada.
62-year-old Ahmed Fouad Mostafa Eldidi and his 26-year-old son, Mostafa Eldidi, were arrested in Richmond Hill, Ont., last week and are facing nine terrorism charges, including conspiracy to commit murder on behalf of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
While most charges are related to activities allegedly carried out in Canada, the older Eldidi is also facing one count of aggravated assault outside of Canada.
LeBlanc states that the Public Safety and Immigration Departments, which collaborate on screening individuals seeking to immigrate to Canada, are working on establishing a timeline of events related to the accused men.
The Conservatives are requesting that the federal government disclose to Canadians what they know about how the elder Eldidi managed to enter the country, despite suspected links to a terrorist organization.
LeBlanc emphasizes that it would be irresponsible for the government to release information that could potentially interfere with the criminal investigation and prosecution’s ability to conduct a successful trial.
