Rising Drug-Resistant Bacteria Linked to Antibiotic Overuse: A Mounting Health Crisis

Australia’s excessive antibiotic use in hospitals is nearly three times higher than that of European countries. A new report from Australia’s Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare warns that the high use of antibiotics in the country is accelerating this problem. According to Senior medical advisor Professor John Turnidge, antibiotic-resistant germs pose a significant health risk, potentially leading to a future where medical procedures become impossible to perform. The personal risks of using antibiotics to affect the gut and potential for chronic illnesses are emphasized.

In Australia, 21 million antibiotic prescriptions were handed out in 2022, despite the fact that they are often misused to treat common infections with no benefit. This has led to a call to action for both healthcare professionals and patients to play their part in preventing antibiotic misuse.

Senior Medical Advisor Peter Collignon warns against antibiotic overuse, stating that it can lead to side effects. For people dealing with non-serious illnesses like the cold or flu, antibiotic use is unnecessary.
