Russian Court Denies Detained US Journalist Gershkovich’s Latest Appeal
A Russian court on Tuesday denied Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich’s latest appeal against his pre-trial detention on espionage charges.
Gershkovich, 32, was arrested by the Federal Security Service (FSB) on March 29 last year, becoming the first U.S. journalist to face such charges in Russia since the Cold War. Both he and his newspaper, as well as the U.S. government, deny the accusations.
No trial date has been set yet, and his detention was recently extended until June 30.
In a closed hearing last month, journalists were allowed to film Gershkovich as he stood in a glass box in the courtroom and smiled at his colleagues.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has hinted at the possibility of releasing Gershkovich in exchange for a Russian prisoner held abroad, but no agreement has been reached so far.
