Senate Republicans Call for Reversal of LNG Export Ban, Citing Potential National Security Threats
The decision made in an election year by the Biden administration is seen as putting America’s relationship with its allies at risk, according to Republicans.
A group of Republican senators is urging the Biden administration to immediately resume liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, citing it as a matter of “national security” crucial for Ukraine’s reliance on American fuel during its conflict.
In January, the White House paused the approval of new licenses for LNG exports to countries without Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with the U.S., the majority of the U.S.’s LNG importers.
The U.S. Department of Energy, responsible for permitting LNG export terminals, has not provided a timeline for the suspension, stating it would last until a thorough evaluation on the impact of LNG shipments on climate change, the economy, and national security is completed.
Amid ongoing conflicts and tensions worldwide, the senators emphasized the importance of allied nations being able to depend on the U.S. for a stable long-term fuel supply.

The senators pointed out the increasing global demand for LNG in the coming years and the need for the U.S. to secure a significant portion of the market against competitors like Russia and Iran.
They emphasized that the U.S. could meet a substantial portion of global LNG demand if allowed to fully develop its LNG capacity, benefiting its economy significantly.
While the U.S. is halting LNG exports, other countries like Russia are expanding their LNG supplies to secure markets in Europe and beyond, posing a potential risk to U.S. interests.
Sen. Dan Sullivan hand-delivered the letter on Monday joined by three other senators, highlighting concerns over the Biden administration’s decision and its potential political motivations.
Additionally, House Republicans have launched an inquiry into the LNG export pause, questioning if it was done to boost President Biden’s popularity ahead of the election.
The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability is seeking documents and communications regarding the decision from key agencies and officials to investigate further.
