Senator Expresses Concern that Hamas Could Rearm and Regroup Despite UN Ceasefire Motion

According to the Shadow Foreign Minister, Simon Birmingham, Australia should have supported AUKUS allies including the United States and the United Kingdom. Birmingham is concerned that a ceasefire in the Middle East would only allow Hamas to “rearm, regroup, and then repeat” attacks, and therefore, Australia should have joined the U.S. and U.K. on this matter. Prior to this, a resolution at the United Nations, which received the support of 153 countries, called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, but Australia voted for the motion, breaking ranks with the U.S. and U.K. Birmingham emphasized the dangers of laying down arms and the ability for Hamas to rearm and regroup. However, Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, has mentioned that they would have preferred the resolution to reference Hamas and the attack on Israel. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has also issued a statement along with the prime ministers of Canada and New Zealand, calling for a change to the ceasefire and condemning the Hamas terror attacks on Israel.
