Senator says $3,000 China-Made Teddy Bears for Politicians are a Waste of Money
Independent Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie criticized the Albanese government for spending over $3,000 (US$2,000) of taxpayer money on distributing teddy bears made in China to all federal MPs. In a video shared on social media on Feb. 27, Lambie was seen holding a brown teddy bear with a “Medicare Urgent Care Clinic” logo on its t-shirt.
She highlighted the irony of using taxpayer money for non-essential items like these bears, especially when it could have been used for critical health care services. Lambie also pointed out the contradiction of advocating for local manufacturing while the bears were made in China.
In addition, Lambie emphasized the importance of increasing access to bulk billing, as Tasmania has seen low rates of bulk billing compared to other states. She argued for changing the rules on bulk billing to ensure all Tasmanians can afford to see a doctor, citing statistics showing financial difficulties as a barrier to seeking medical care.
The controversy over the teddy bears arose during Senate estimates on Feb. 15 when it was revealed that the Health Department had spent around $4,000 on them. Health Department Secretary Blair Comley defended the purpose of the bears, stating they were meant to raise awareness about urgent care clinics. However, the spending drew criticism from various Australians who questioned the government’s spending priorities.
