Singh States That Pipelines Would Not Be Top Priority for NDP Energy Policy

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh emphasizes the importance of an east-west clean electricity corridor as the top priority for expanding the Canadian energy market, rather than focusing on new pipelines.

While Singh is not completely ruling out pipelines, he believes that any pipeline projects must be approved by the communities they pass through, avoid environmental harm, create good jobs, and adhere to indigenous consultation requirements.

Currently, the majority of Canadian energy exports go to the United States, which has threatened Canada with tariffs on all exports, including a 10 percent tax on energy products like oil.

In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, Singh pledges that an NDP government would exclusively use Canadian steel and aluminum in public infrastructure projects.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre supports the construction of an east-west pipeline and aims to streamline the approval process for resource projects.

Liberal leadership contender Chrystia Freeland proposes making Canada an “energy superpower” by expanding hydro power and increasing the export of liquefied natural gas.
