Six Hamas Leaders Charged by US in Terrorism Case
The Department of Justice announced that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and five other living and deceased senior Hamas officials were charged with multiple criminal charges for alleged terrorist activity from the 1990s to the present day on Sept. 3.
The seven-count indictment was unsealed in a federal court in New York City on Tuesday, naming Sinwar alongside Ismail Haniyeh, Mohammad Al-Masri, Marwan Issa, Khaled Meshaal, and Ali Baraka.
The DOJ press statement identified Sinwar as the current leader of Hamas and one of the founders of the al-Qassam Brigades. U.S. officials believe he is in the Gaza Strip, while Meshaal is believed to be residing in Qatar. Baraka oversees Hamas’s national relations abroad and resides in Lebanon.
The three remaining Hamas defendants are either confirmed or believed to be deceased.
The Israeli military reported the killing of Al-Masri, also known as Mohammed Deif, a Qassam Brigades leader, in a July 13 airstrike. Issa, another Qassam Brigades commander, was reported killed on March 10.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
