Source Confirms Mélanie Julie’s Decision not to Run for Liberal Party Leadership
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly is no longer in the running to replace Justin Trudeau as Liberal leader, a Liberal source confirms to The Canadian Press.
Joly is expected to address the media today outside a Canada-U.S. relations cabinet committee meeting on Parliament Hill.
The Liberal leadership race is now fully underway, with the party having set a date for the race. More high-profile candidates are expected to announce soon whether they will run or opt out.
Prospective leaders have until Jan. 23 to declare their candidacy and must pay a $350,000 fee to enter the race, which is scheduled to end on March 9.
This gives them just two weeks to decide whether to launch a campaign to succeed Trudeau.
There has been growing anticipation for months about whether former central banker Mark Carney, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, and former B.C. premier Christy Clark will enter the race.
