South Australian MP Arrested for Drug Charges, Acknowledges Decline in Mental Health
David Speirs recently resigned from his position as the leader of the Liberal Party.
South Australia Police have confirmed that David Speirs, member of Parliament for Black, was arrested on Sept. 26, 2024, and subsequently charged with two counts of supplying a controlled substance.
The alleged offences occurred between Aug. 2 and 3, and again on Aug. 9. Following his arrest, police executed a search warrant at his home.
Speirs has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
In light of his arrest, Speirs made a public announcement through a video, sharing the challenges he has faced since his resignation as the leader of the Liberal Party.
“My mental health has been in significant decline,” he said, acknowledging that he has not been his best self.
The MP denied the accusations of illicit substance use, calling them a political vendetta.
Speirs expressed concern about the abuse of governmental authority against political adversaries, stating, “I could continue serving as a Parliament member and defending myself while fulfilling my duties, but I don’t think I can effectively represent my local community while dealing with this issue, safeguarding my mental health, and supporting my family and friends who are by my side.”
He also voiced his discontent with the media attention on his personal life since the accusations emerged.
“Since these allegations surfaced, my residence has been searched by armed police, and I was taken into custody and interrogated. I believe there’s someone with malicious intent behind this,” he declared.
“Although I am devastated by what has transpired, I will fight to prove my innocence.”
The former Liberal Party leader announced his decision to resign from Parliament in the upcoming legislative session.
“It’s time for me to move forward. I aim to rebuild myself in the coming months and beyond. I want to be a better son, a better friend, and a better individual. This process will require time, and I believe it’s best done away from public life as it stands.”
He also confirmed that he has informed the state Liberal leader and the party about his choice and will suspend his party membership as he seeks resolution to the matter.
“However, I am unwavering in my commitment to liberal principles and the mission of the Liberal Party,” he added.
