Starmer Calls on Allies to Increase Support for Ukraine
The UK’s prime minister and his Cabinet have pledged ongoing support to Ukraine with funds and materials for as long as necessary.
During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Budapest, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer urged European allies to increase their backing for Ukraine while reiterating the UK’s steadfast commitment to Kyiv.
Starmer emphasized, “Our support for Ukraine is unwavering, and we must step up our efforts to see this through.”
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the UK’s enduring support during challenging times.
Last month, the Treasury announced a £2.26 billion loan to Kyiv for military equipment, in addition to the UK’s annual £3 billion military commitment and the £12.8 billion already allocated for military, economic, and humanitarian aid.
U.S. Election
Following the election of President-elect Donald Trump, concerns were raised about potential changes in U.S. support for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy, who spoke with Trump post-election, emphasized the importance of a strong transatlantic alliance between the U.S. and Europe.
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Trump on his victory, signaling openness to dialogue with the new administration.
North Korean Troops
At the EPC summit, concerns were raised about the increasing number of North Korean troops on the Ukrainian border, prompting worry about Putin’s actions.
NATO’s secretary general highlighted the shared threat posed by Russia, North Korea, Iran, and China, emphasizing the need for increased defense spending in Europe.
New Sanctions on Russia
The UK announced 56 sanctions targeting Russia’s military industrial complex and Russian-backed mercenary groups, aimed at disrupting the supply chain of equipment used in the conflict with Ukraine.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that these measures aim to counter Russia’s destabilizing foreign policies and illicit international networks.
