Starmer Emphasizes Urgency of ‘Swift Action’ in Middle East Ceasefire
The prime minister spoke with Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu following the failure by the U.S. secretary of state to broker a peace deal in Gaza.
During a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized the urgent need to secure a ceasefire in the Middle East and release hostages in Gaza.
Starmer’s statements followed U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s ninth visit to the region without successfully mediating an agreement.
Both leaders agreed on the importance of regional de-escalation and welcomed Israel’s support for the U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal.
‘Added Urgency’
Recent events, including the killings of militant leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah in Iran and Lebanon, have increased the urgency to reach a deal to prevent a wider regional war.
Starmer offered his condolences to the Israeli people and the loved ones of the hostages recovered in Gaza, including British-Israeli Nadav Popplewell.
The conflict began last October when Hamas-led militants entered Israel, resulting in significant casualties and displacement of civilians.
The proposal to bridge gaps between Israel and Hamas has faced challenges, with Hamas calling it a “reversal” of previous agreements.
‘Bridging Proposal’
During the conversation between Starmer and Netanyahu, diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and release hostages were discussed, with a focus on the need for swift action to de-escalate the situation.
It was agreed that miscalculation could result in significant costs for all sides, emphasizing the importance of upholding international law and regional security.
‘Time is of the Essence’
The urgency to reach a ceasefire and hostage agreement was highlighted by Blinken following his meetings in Egypt and Qatar.
Hamas accused the United States of accepting new conditions from Israel, complicating the negotiation process.
Israel’s military actions in Gaza, including an air strike on a school shelter, have escalated tensions in the region.
