Starmer: UK Has No Desire to Be Drawn Into War
The British government considers the United States a ‘reliable’ ally on defense, security, and intelligence, as MPs were informed.
During Prime Minister’s Questions, Sir Keir Starmer emphasized that avoiding war is a top priority for Britain.
Starmer stated that he is actively engaging with key players, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, to secure a peace agreement and ensure its enforcement for lasting peace.
He assured that any decision on British troop deployment to Ukraine would be subject to a vote by MPs, although such action is not currently under consideration.
The opposition leader, Kemi Badenoch, raised concerns about potential intelligence-sharing issues with Ukraine and the impact on the Five Eyes alliance.
Starmer echoed the importance of a global collaboration for reaching a peace agreement without having to choose between Europe and the U.S.
Following meetings between leaders, Starmer reaffirmed the strong partnership between the UK and the U.S., emphasizing the support for NATO’s Article 5 and mutual ties.
Regarding the reliability of the U.S., Starmer reassured that they remain a dependable ally in defense, security, and intelligence matters.
Acknowledging the sacrifices of British soldiers and ongoing discussions on peacekeeping efforts, the UK reaffirmed its commitment to increased defense spending.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth commended the UK’s commitment to boosting defense spending as a positive step towards strengthening the partnership.
The UK and U.S. Defense Secretaries are scheduled to meet in Washington to further discuss defense cooperation.
Amidst international developments, the Kremlin welcomed Ukraine’s readiness for peace negotiations while highlighting legal restrictions on direct talks with Russia.
