Starting in September, international students will have the option to work up to 24 hours per week.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced that starting in September, international students will be permitted to work off-campus for up to 24 hours per week.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Liberals had temporarily lifted the 20-hour work limit for international students to address labor shortages, but this waiver is set to expire on April 30.

After April 30, the work hours limit will return to 20 hours per week until September, when the government plans to implement a permanent change allowing for 24-hour work weeks.

International students can work unlimited hours during school breaks in the summer and winter holidays.

Reports from earlier this year indicated that officials in Minister Miller’s department warned that the temporary waiver could detract students from their studies and potentially undermine the objectives of temporary foreign worker programs.
