Stephen Roach, labeled as Beijing’s ‘Good Friend’, prohibited from discussing Hong Kong
Stephen Roach, former Morgan Stanley Asia chair, expressed his experience at the recent China Development Forum, where he felt prohibited from sharing differing opinions on Hong Kong. According to Mr. Roach, he faced constraints at the forum that prevented him from speaking his mind about the future of Hong Kong. This restriction left him disappointed as he believed it limited open discussions at the event.
Mr. Roach, who has been attending the China Development Forum for the past 24 years, highlighted his concerns about Hong Kong’s future, drawing attention to the impact of political factors and international circumstances. His previous statement that “Hong Kong is over” has sparked controversy, with many officials and commentators offering differing views on the matter.
Despite facing pushback on his remarks, Mr. Roach remains committed to fostering constructive dialogue on issues concerning Hong Kong’s autonomy and economic stability. He emphasized the need for open debates and discussions, urging leaders to focus on addressing critical challenges facing the region.
