Sunak Rejects Spring Election as Starmer Focuses on Economy
The Conservative government and the opposition Labour Party are preparing for a general election but the date and key issues remain uncertain.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has virtually ruled out the possibility of a spring general election, while Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has mentioned that he wants to prioritize the economy as the main issue.
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey criticized Mr. Sunak, claiming that he is holding onto power instead of letting the public make their decision.
Sir Keir stated that they are ready for an election and believe that the country is too, as there is a desire for change among the people.
Referring to the Prime Minister, he questioned the reason behind not setting a date and suggested that it has serious implications for the country if Mr. Sunak refuses to commit to a date for the election.
Mr. Sunak, who needs to hold an election by Jan. 28, 2025, declined to categorically rule out a May election, but mentioned that he wanted more time to implement his policies since taking over from Liz Truss in Sep. 2022.
Sunak Promises to ‘Keep Cutting People’s Taxes’
The Prime Minister emphasized that he will continue to cut taxes and stated that the difference between the Tories and Labour in the next election will be their approach to managing the economy. Meanwhile, Labour is focused on making the election about the economy and cost of living, while the Tories aim to highlight immigration issues and their Rwanda policy.
Sir Keir acknowledged the widespread disillusionment with politicians and mentioned that voter apathy remains a major challenge for Labour.
Starmer: ‘This Isn’t a Game’
He stressed that politics should not be trivialized and that the objective is not only to defeat the Tories but also to change the entire political mindset they represent.
Sir Keir also accused the government of seeking to exploit division for political gain and recognized that one of the key issues in the election will be Labour’s plan for green energy investment.

Labour’s green investment policy is expected to be a significant point of discussion, with Mr. Sunak raising concerns about the potential impact on inflation, mortgage rates, and taxes. Sir Keir defended the policy, emphasizing that it would be subject to the party’s fiscal rules.
