Surveillance and Stalking Communist Tactics Have No Place in Canada
Living in a communist country means you can never be sure who may be listening to you or what consequences you may face for saying the wrong thing to the wrong person.
Should Canadians have to endure the same uncertainty, anxiety, and fear?
Chinese-Canadians, Hong Kongers, Tibetans, Uyghurs, and others who speak out against the oppressive Chinese Communist Party find themselves in a similar dilemma, even when they have sought refuge in a safer, freer nation.
It’s no secret that dissenters against the CCP become targets of the regime, even when overseas. For instance, Conservative MP Michael Chong faced a coordinated disinformation campaign during his electoral campaign. This issue isn’t limited to one party, as NDP’s Jenny Kwan has also been targeted.
However, it’s not just politicians who are affected. There are reports of ordinary people who oppose the CCP facing harassment as well.
For example, during a pro-democracy demonstration in Vancouver, a Chinese man was seen filming pro-Hong Kong protesters from a distance. Activists like Cherie Wong and Turnisa Matsedik-Qira have received threatening phone calls and faced physical harassment. Even as far back as 2001, Falun Gong practitioners in Calgary reported being targeted.
The Chinese Communist Party has a history of suppressing dissent and violating human rights, similar to other socialist and communist regimes like Stalin’s Russia, Castro’s Cuba, and Kim’s Korea. While China has undergone economic reforms, the surveillance and persecution of citizens persist.
Chinese Canadians shouldn’t have to fear reprisal for exercising their freedom of speech in their new homeland.
Various steps have been proposed by experts and activists to address this issue, such as creating a registry of foreign agents and investigating CCP’s influence on Chinese-language media in Canada.
Additionally, spreading awareness is crucial. By sharing stories of those targeted by the CCP, we can shed light on the dangers of socialism and authoritarian regimes.

It’s important to take threats like the CCP seriously to prevent Canada from falling into a similar authoritarian trap. Socialism may sound good in theory, but history shows its devastating consequences.
