Survey finds Aldi is the cheapest in Aussie supermarket price wars

Although a basket of 14 items is most affordable at Aldi, consumers in Tasmania and the Northern Territory are facing higher prices due to a lack of competition.

A recent

survey

conducted on supermarket prices in Australia reveals that shoppers in Tasmania and the Northern Territory are paying more compared to the rest of the country.

Choice, a consumer advocate group, examined the prices of a basket of 14 everyday items across various supermarket retailers and found that Aldi offers the best value.

Aldi, a global discount supermarket originating from Germany, entered the Australian market in 2001. Despite its reputation for cost-effective pricing and efficiency, its absence in Tasmania and the Northern Territory has resulted in higher prices for consumers in those regions.

The survey showed that a standard basket of essentials from Aldi was 25 percent cheaper than similar items from Coles and Woolworths, priced at $51.51 (US$34.36) compared to $69.33 and $68.58, respectively.

In the absence of Aldi, Tasmanians paid an average of $68.90 for the same set of items, while those in the Northern Territory spent $68.82.
