Survey Shows One-Third of Doctors Considering Moving Abroad
A recent survey by the General Medical Council (GMC) revealed that 13 percent of practicing doctors in the UK are “very likely” to emigrate in the next year, while an additional 17 percent stated they are “fairly likely” to move abroad.
This data suggests that nearly a third of doctors in the UK are considering migration within the next 12 months, highlighting potential challenges for the healthcare sector. However, the GMC noted that past research shows a discrepancy between intention and action, indicating that the actual number of doctors leaving the country may be lower.
GMC Chief Executive Charlie Massey emphasized the importance of addressing these findings to improve conditions for healthcare professionals in the UK. While the number of doctors actually leaving the country remains relatively low, Massey described the survey results as a cautionary signal for the future.
The survey, conducted by IFF Research and published on April 12, gathered insights from over 3,000 doctors currently practicing in the UK or who have worked abroad. Key reasons cited for considering emigration included seeking higher pay (79 percent), feeling undervalued professionally (75 percent), desiring a better quality of life (72 percent), and wanting more non-working time (61 percent).
The GMC categorized respondents into six groups based on their attitudes and experiences. The most dissatisfied group, labeled “Deep Discontent,” expressed a strong likelihood of leaving, while others such as “System Sceptics” and “Burn-out” were also contemplating migration due to various concerns.
Australia emerged as the top destination for doctors considering moving abroad, followed by New Zealand, India, and Canada. The survey results underscore the importance of addressing healthcare professionals’ concerns to retain talent and ensure a stable workforce in the UK.
