Team Canada Wins Gold in Men’s 4X100m Relay
PARIS—Canada emerged victorious in the men’s Olympic 4x100m relay on Friday after the United States, expected to win, made a crucial error in the baton exchange and was subsequently disqualified.
Andre de Grasse delivered an exceptional final leg, clocking 37.50 seconds to secure the gold for the team, marking their second victory in the event since their 1996 triumph.
Akani Simbine, who narrowly missed out on an individual 100 meters medal, produced a stellar last leg for South Africa, earning them a silver with an African record time of 37.57. Zharnel Hughes also excelled in the final leg, securing a bronze for Britain in 37.61.
Hughes was part of the team that initially won silver in Tokyo but was later disqualified due to a doping violation by teammate CJ Ujah.
This latest mishap adds to the United States’ string of failures in the event, as they have not claimed victory since 2000.
The team, led by Christian Coleman, got off to a strong start but encountered issues during the handover with Kenny Bednarek, leading to a disqualification for an illegal exchange.
Since 1995, the United States have experienced 11 instances of dropped batons, disqualifications, or bans in the Olympics and World Championships.
