The Lesson BC and Ontario Can Learn from Why Many Canadians are Choosing to Move to Alberta, According to Cory Morgan
Commentary
Gross domestic product (GDP) per capita figures paint a bleak picture of individual wealth in Canada. The country’s GDP per capita has decreased to US$55,000, while the United States has seen growth to US$76,000. Additionally, housing affordability has reached crisis levels in many regions, and there are deficiencies in various services from healthcare to policing, placing a burden on citizens.
The economic challenges have been exacerbated by high numbers of international migrants entering the country. In an effort to avoid a recession, the government has been admitting record numbers of international migrants. While this boosts the national GDP, it also decreases the GDP per capita and escalates the demand for products and services, creating a detrimental economic cycle.
This trend of migration is also observed in the United States, with states like California and New York experiencing net losses in population to more conservative states like Florida and Texas. You can read more about this here.
