The Regrettable Deterioration of Canada’s Image as a Trustworthy and Esteemed Global Player, by Peter Menzies
Commentary
Canada, once known for its moderation and global respect, has transformed over the years into a country with radical social policies that invite mockery from the international media. It is no longer seen as a nation that commands influence on the international stage.
One distinctive social policy in Canada is the absence of any laws or restrictions on abortions, making it one of the most liberal countries in the world in that regard. Additionally, the country has been a frontrunner in championing gay rights and gender issues domestically and internationally under the leadership of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Another controversial issue in Canada is Medical Assistance in Dying, which has garnered criticism from disability groups and internationally for its potential expansions beyond the initial scope.
Furthermore, Canada’s stance on various global issues, including the conflict in Gaza, has raised questions about its diplomatic effectiveness and moral standing under the current leadership.
The government’s controversial Online Harms Act, aimed at restricting freedom of speech, has also attracted foreign scrutiny and criticism.
