The US Imposes Additional Sanctions on Maduro Supporters in Response to Venezuelan Election and Government Crackdown
The United States has officially recognized Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González as the rightful president of Venezuela and called for Nicolas Maduro to step down.
On November 27, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced new sanctions against 21 security and cabinet-level officials aligned with Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
These sanctions target senior administration officials within Venezuela’s security forces and military intelligence, following Venezuela’s controversial presidential elections four months ago.
The purpose of these U.S. sanctions is to freeze any assets belonging to the sanctioned individuals and prevent them from engaging in transactions with U.S. entities.
In addition, the U.S. State Department will impose visa restrictions on officials connected to Maduro.
Although Venezuela’s National Electoral Council declared Nicolas Maduro the winner of the July 28 election, Maduro’s political opponents in Venezuela have disputed these results.
