This Fall, Ottawa Plans to Establish Temporary Resident Targets for the First Time
Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, has announced that Canada will establish targets for new temporary resident arrivals for the first time.
Miller aims to decrease the temporary resident population by five percent over the next three years as Canada has seen a significant rise in temporary residents each year. Miller has previously referred to Canada as being “addicted” to temporary workers.
The initial targets will be set in September, and Miller plans to convene a meeting in May with provincial, territorial, and federal ministers to discuss how these levels should be determined.
Additionally, Miller has instructed his department to review existing programs that bring in temporary residents to better align them with labor needs and to eliminate any abuse within the system.
