Thousands of Electric Kettles Recalled by Health Canada for Fire Risk

Health Canada is recalling more than 20,000 electric kettles sold across the country due to a potential fire hazard.

Three incidents of À la Cuisine electric kettle bases overheating have been reported as of May 30, Health Canada said in its recall notice. The base of the kettle can overheat and melt the plastic covering the electrical wiring after the appliance is plugged in, the notice said, adding that no injuries have been reported.

The recall involves three types of stainless steel electric kettles with product numbers JF-788, FY-2010C, and JF-2015. Customers are being advised to stop using their kettle if it is labelled with any of these product numbers.

The company reported 20,647 of the made-in-China kettles have been sold in Canada between January 2023 and May 2024.

Any customer affected by the recall can receive a new kettle of equal value. Simply head to Hart Stores, Maison en Gros, Hart Home, or Hart Maison for a replacement.

This is not the first time À la Cuisine electric kettles have been the subject of a recall in Canada. Health Canada issued a similar recall notice in 2020 for the same issue with the company’s glass kettles.

Other Recent Recalls

The latest recall comes just weeks after Health Canada recalled another made-in-China product sold in Canada. A promotional NÜTRL tumbler was recalled last month due to a chemical hazard which had been linked to 43 reports of ill health by the end of May.

Approximately 33,000 of the 30-ounce stainless steel tumblers were handed out as part of a promotion to any customer who purchased a case of 12 to 15 NÜTRL vodka seltzers at LCBO stores and other licensed retailers between April 29 and May 17.

The recall of the white tumblers, which feature the NÜTRL logo, was due to a manufacturing defect that could lead the NÜTRL-branded tumbler to release contaminants, the Health Canada notice said.

The agency also issued a nation-wide recall last month for more than 97,000 USB wall chargers that were sold on Amazon.ca because the product poses an “unreasonable risk” of electric shock.

The chargers were available as a two-pack or five-pack and can be identified by the Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASIN) B083LBZX1F and B082XPSDFL, the government agency said in its recall notice.

The safety hazard was discovered as part of Health Canada’s sampling and evaluation program.
