Three MLAs Back BC Farming Family Facing Culling of 400 Ostriches
With tears in her eyes, a member of an ostrich farming family urged the provincial government to intervene and prevent the cull of their 400 birds.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency mandated this cull in late 2024 following an avian flu outbreak. However, family spokesperson Katie Pasitney insists that the birds on her parents’ farm in Edgewood, B.C., currently remain “healthy” and “happy,” posing no danger.
Pasitney noted that these birds are vital to her family’s livelihood, and the prospect of culling them would be devastating.
Currently, Pasitney is in Victoria meeting with provincial officials, including B.C. Agriculture Minister Lana Popham, and is receiving backing from three former Conservative MLAs, who now serve as independents.
The family and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency await a Federal Court judge’s decision regarding the future of the animals.
Peace River North MLA Jordan Kealy recognizes that the ultimate decision rests with the federal government but believes that the provincial government can assist by lobbying for an exemption to halt the execution.
