Tone-Deaf Greens Cancel ANZAC Dance Party Due to Opposition from RSL and Politicians
On April 25, while Australia and New Zealand take a moment to honor their fallen soldiers, the Greens are hosting a fundraiser with tickets priced up to $1,000.
The Greens Party in Western Australia had planned to hold a fundraising dance party on ANZAC Day but had to cancel due to public criticism. ANZAC Day is a day of remembrance for the lives lost in wars, and it is customary for politicians to attend memorial services rather than engage in campaign activities.
The event, dubbed the “Greens Party Party,” was set to feature five DJs at a venue in Wembley, Perth. Admission fees ranged from $30 to $1,000, with proceeds intended to support the election of Greens candidates to political seats.
The party faced backlash for its insensitivity towards the significance of ANZAC Day. Various political figures condemned the timing of the event, calling it disgraceful and tone-deaf. The RSL, an organization that fundraises primarily on ANZAC Day, also expressed disapproval of the fundraiser.
After widespread criticism, the event link was taken down, and the WA Greens announced a change in the fundraiser timing. Nevertheless, the controversy surrounding the fundraiser continues to highlight the importance of respecting solemn occasions like ANZAC Day.
