Top 100 Alleged Fraud Cases Involving Disability Scheme Before Court
Efforts are currently underway to combat individuals in the Australian community who exploit government funding for personal gain, according to Shorten.
More than 100 instances of suspected fraud in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) have been brought to court following numerous tips.
NDIS Minister Bill Shorten has set up a task force to tackle unethical providers abusing the system.
There are currently 60 ongoing cases in court, he mentioned.
“It’s a significant issue within the scheme,” he shared with ABC Radio on April 22.
Shorten pointed out that not enough measures had been taken to safeguard the scheme against false invoices and dishonest service providers.
“Therefore, extensive efforts are being made to address scammers and those who view government funds as an easy way to make money,” he added.

The increasing expenses associated with the scheme have placed a significant strain on the national budget.
According to Shorten, the NDIS should not be the sole solution for individuals with disabilities, as there are Australians who require assistance but may not fit the scheme’s criteria.
Adjustments in assessment and eligibility standards are essential, but there are individuals who will require lifelong support, he added.
“We have a percentage of Australians living with lifelong disabilities,” Shorten stated. “However, our goal is to prioritize early intervention. Most parents with children in the scheme do not want them to rely on it indefinitely.
“We need early intervention services that provide the necessary support.”
