Tory Leadership Candidate Tugendhat Calls for ‘Conservative Revolution’ in UK
During the last day of the conference, four candidates presented their visions before the upcoming voting sessions that will determine the party’s leadership.
Tory leadership contender Tom Tugendhat called for a “new Conservative revolution” in the UK. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the needs of the British people and delivering on issues like healthcare, immigration, security, and education. Tugendhat proposed capping immigration at 100,000 annually and investing more in nuclear power to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
Former Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch pledged to “rewire, reboot, and reprogram” the British state if elected as leader. She expressed the need to reconsider various aspects of the government, including international agreements, human rights laws, and the Civil Service. Badenoch warned against socialist ideas and identity politics, urging the party to defend traditional Conservative values.
Rival candidate Robert Jenrick outlined his vision for a “new” Conservative Party, advocating for leaving the European Convention on Human Rights and implementing a British bill of rights. He also promised to prioritize infrastructure development, oppose extreme net zero policies, and reduce foreign aid spending while increasing defense funding.
James Cleverly focused on the importance of delivering policies with enthusiasm and positivity, drawing inspiration from former U.S. President Ronald Reagan. He proposed cutting “bad taxes” like stamp duty and limiting the state’s share of individual earnings. Cleverly called for a more Reaganesque approach of small government and free-market principles to build infrastructure and promote Conservatism.
