Tourism Minister Seeks Montreal Mayor Role, Rules Out Running in Future Federal Election
Tourism Minister Soraya Martinez Ferrada announced that she will not seek re-election but instead will run to lead one of Montreal’s major parties in the upcoming municipal elections. This announcement was made through a video posted on social media on Feb. 6.
In the video, Martinez Ferrada expressed the need for a more ambitious administration in Montreal that listens to its citizens.
Prior to Martinez Ferrada, former Liberal cabinet minister Denis Coderre led Ensemble Montréal and served as mayor starting in 2013.
Ensemble Montréal currently holds the second-largest number of seats in the municipal council, trailing behind Projet Montréal. Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante, who leads Projet Montréal, has decided not to seek a third term.
Since joining the Liberal cabinet in July 2023, Martinez Ferrada has also served as the national campaign co-chair for the Liberal Party. The Epoch Times reached out to the Liberal Party and Martinez Ferrada for comments, but no response was received by the time of publication.
The next federal election is set for October 2025 at the latest, with opposition parties pledging to topple the government through a vote of non-confidence once Parliament resumes from prorogation.
Martinez Ferrada’s decision to leave the cabinet follows similar moves by several of her colleagues in recent months, including Chrystia Freeland and Karina Gould, who are also vying for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada. Another Quebec minister, Pablo Rodriguez, left the Liberal cabinet and caucus last summer to compete for the leadership of the Quebec Liberal Party, with the vote for that contest scheduled for mid-June.
