Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Two Fishermen in Sydney as They are Swept Off Rocks

Two fishermen are dead after being swept off rocks at a risky fishing spot. The men are yet to be formally identified after being pulled from the water in Sydney’s south on Monday afternoon, May 27. The pair were fishing off rocks on Cape Solander Drive at Kurnell about 2.45pm when they were swept away. They were pulled from the water a short time later but were unable to be revived, New South Wales (NSW) Police said. Marine rescuers and lifeguards were involved in the search and recovery alongside police and paramedics. The area is a declared high-risk rock-fishing location where anglers are required to wear life jackets.

The law was brought in after a coronial inquest into nine rock-fishing-related deaths in NSW, which found safety advice and education made no difference to the number of people who died. A report is being prepared for the coroner.
